History

HISTORYThe Elwes Arms is located within the village of Great Billing to the east of Northampton.Listed in the Domesday Book, the village was situated to the west of the parish church up until the 14th Century. The population was then decimated by the Black Death, and they abandoned the old village and rebuilt it gradually in its present location. It Is fortunate that parts of the village retain much of the old atmosphere, centring on the 12th century church of St. Andrew and the old rectory. The old village pump and horse trough can still be seen, and there are several other notable buildings in both Church Way and Elwes Way.The story of the Elwes Arms is interwined with that of the Elwes family, who at one time owned the whole of the village with the exception of one house and five cottages. They lived in Billing Hall, built in 1776 and unfortunately demolished in 1956. The most famous of the Elwes family was Gervase Elwes.Gervase Henry Cary-Elwes was born in Billing Hall on the 15th November 1866. His schooling began at The R.C. Oratory School and then he attended Woburn School in Weybridge and then finally to Oxford where he initially trained as a lawyer and diplomat. At the age of 22 he married Lady Winifride Feilding.At the age of 28, he began formal singing lessons and by his late thirties, he gave his first professional performance as a tenor in London.During the early 1900s, Gervase and his wife played an important part in encouraging and organizing the provincial Music Competition Fevtivals in Lincolnshire, at their family home, often conducting or singing himself.In 1907, he was the foremost English-born performer of the Brahms lieder and he made a tour of Germany which included Berlin, Munich, Leipzig, Frankfort and Cologne and was greatly admired.In January 1912 in a recital for Henry Wood at Queens Hall, he introduced the settings of poems of Paul Verlaine by Poldowski. He was the deicatee and first performer of (and the first person to record) Ralph Vaugan Williams cycle "On Wenlock Edge" and many of the finest songs of Roger Quilter, both of whom wrote with his voice in mind.Sadly, on the 12th January 1921, Gervase was killed in a horrific accident at Black Bay railway Station in Boston, Massachusetts, in the midst of a high-profile tour of the United States. The singer attempted to return to the conductor an overcoat that had fallen off the train. He leaned over too far and was hit by the train, falling between the moving carriages and the platform. He was the deicatee and first performer of (and the first person to record) Ralph Vaugan Williams cycle "On Wenlock Edge" and many of the finest songs of Roger Quilter, both of whom wrote with his voice in mind.Sadly, on the 12th January 1921, Gervase was killed in a horrific accident at Black Bay railway Station in Boston, Massachusetts, in the midst of a high-profile tour of the United States. MENUThe Elwes Arms is all about well cooked food and presented to a standard that you would expect.Our ingredients and produce are of the finest and freshest and we source locally as much as possible.Menus are updated regularly and are accompanied by the Chefs Special board, located in the lounge bar.As everything is prepared fresh, special dietary needs can usually be adhered to.We offer full waitress service and booking in advance is wholly recommended to ensure a place at one of our restuarant tables, although table service is also available throughout the pub where you can relax within its unique atmosphere.Family get-togethers, business dinners, office parties and other celebrations can all be catered for of parties of up to 30, making the Elwes Arms the perfect place to make your memories. FOOTBALL CLUB
Elwes Arms Football Club was formed in the Summer of 2010 by Nicholas Berry (Chairman), Simon Thompson (Secretary / Treasurer) and Lee Brown (Manager) who have all been there and worn the t-shirt in local football.The team made up of players aged 17 -34 and captained by former Derby County player Mark Hofford, come from the local and wider community and play in the Premier Division of the Northants Sunday Conference League. The team have the Charter Standard Award, the FA's quality assurance kitemark for grassroots clubs to obtain.Home games are played at Great Billing Pocket Park playing fields and kick off is at 10:30am. Pop on up and support the lads if you are in the area and then take the two minute walk to the Elwes Arms for a drink after.
